How Transcendentalism had affected Politics and Government:
_ _ _
When Thoreau was a young lad, he was a common mischievous boy. In his early years as a transcendentalist, he introduced the idea of Civil disobedience. This concept in government had shaped many governments across the world. One such example of this is the idea of communism versus capitalism. Though looked down upon today, communism draws its roots to transcendentalism in that way that everyone should be given human equality. Capitalism in the United states also draws its roots from the this concept as well as Thoreau had stated “That government is best which governs least ” (
, Civil Disobedience). This can be illustrated with the idea that the Bill of Rights was to protect the people from crushing the people (although they were in existence long before his time. Though Thoreau was incarcerated for his ideas against the government, he was well ahead of his time.

MLK, Mahatma Gandhi, Fidel Castro, Stalin, and other civil rights leaders based their ideas off of history and certain philosophies that had a similar meaning. This changed politics because it affected governments around the world. Also the above quote goes along with the idea that people should not be greedy and nor should the government as Thoreau stated “Grow wild according to thy nature ... Enjoy the land but own it not ” (Thoreau). Along with the idea that government should respect the people, Transcendentalism had given the idea of simplicity as Thoreau had stated “I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government ” (Thoreau, Civil Disobedience).
